by Joseph Dalton Hooker

Or, Notes of a Naturalist in Bengal, the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas, the Khasia Mountains, etc.

About 18 h 36 min of reading39 chapters

Joseph Dalton Hooker, botanist and later director of Kew Gardens, spent the years 1847 to 1851 exploring the Himalaya, and his Himalayan Journals, first published in 1854, record those travels. He crosses Bengal, climbs into Sikkim and eastern Nepal, explores high passes toward Tibet, and then works in the Khasia hills of Assam. He describes plants, rocks, glaciers, rivers, weather and the peoples of the mountains with the eye of a field scientist, and collects the rhododendrons that transformed British gardens. The narrative includes his arrest by Sikkim officials in 1849 with his companion Archibald Campbell, an episode that led to British reprisal.
