George Eliot; a Critical Study of Her Life, Writings and Philosophy
George Willis Cooke, an American writer and lecturer, published this study of George Eliot in 1883, soon after her death. The first chapters follow her life: her early years, her work as translator and editor, her union with George Henry Lewes and her career as a novelist. Cooke then turns to her literary traits, her theory of the novel, her poetry, and above all her philosophy, religious tendencies and ethical teaching, which he traces to Comte, Spencer and the thought of her age, before discussing the novels in turn from the early books through Romola and Felix Holt. It is a serious early attempt to read her fiction as the expression of a coherent view of life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
