From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America
James Longstreet, one of Robert E. Lee's senior commanders, published these memoirs in 1896, three decades after the end of the Civil War. He describes his service from the first battle of Manassas through the Peninsula campaign, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, his campaign in Tennessee and his return to Virginia, where he served until the surrender at Appomattox. After the war Longstreet joined the Republican Party and was blamed by many Southerners for the defeat at Gettysburg, and his book is in part a defense of his own conduct. Its detailed accounts of command decisions make it an important Confederate memoir. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
