Frank Fairlegh, or Scenes from the Life of a Private Pupil, by Frank E. Smedley, appeared in 1850 with illustrations by George Cruikshank. Frank, the narrator, is sent to a clergyman's house to be prepared for Cambridge alongside a group of other young men, and the novel follows him there and through his university years. There are practical jokes, boating parties, a duel, a hunt and a long rivalry with a dangerous enemy, as well as the friendship of the good-natured Harry Oaklands and the antics of the irrepressible Lawless. Light, episodic and comic, it was a popular Victorian story of youth. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
