Fishing from the Earliest Times

by William Radcliffe

About 11 h 31 min of reading52 chapters

Fishing from the Earliest Times, published in 1921, is William Radcliffe's survey of what the ancient world knew and wrote about angling. A fisherman trained in the classics, he reads Homer, Herodotus, Theocritus, Pliny, Martial, Aelian, Oppian and Ausonius for everything they say about rods, lines, hooks and bait, asking such questions as who first mentioned an artificial fly and whether the Roman rod was jointed. Later sections turn to Egypt, where tomb paintings show the rod in use around 2000 BC, then to Assyria, to the fish of the Hebrew scriptures and finally to China. Fish-gods, sacred fish, Diocletian's price edict and the ring of Polycrates all find a place. The tone is learned, discursive and partisan. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
