Fifty Years In The Northwest
With An Introduction And Appendix Containing Reminiscences, Incidents And Notes
Fifty Years in the Northwest, published in 1888, is W. H. C. Folsom's history of the upper Mississippi and St. Croix valleys, built on the journals he had kept since arriving at Prairie du Chien from Maine in 1836 at the age of nineteen. Folsom worked as a lumberman, trader and legislator at Stillwater and Taylors Falls, and his book moves county by county through Wisconsin and Minnesota, recording the first settlers, sawmills, steamboats, Indian treaties, frontier justice, land claims and the founding of towns, with hundreds of short biographies of pioneers he knew. An introduction and appendix add reminiscences and notes. It is local history of the most concrete kind, and a primary source for the early white settlement of the region. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
