Europa's Fairy Book

by Joseph Jacobs

About 3 h 53 min of reading57 chapters

Europa's Fairy Book, published in 1916 with pictures by John D. Batten, is Joseph Jacobs's attempt to restore what he believed to be the common European forms of the best-known folk tales. A folklorist best known for his English and Celtic collections, Jacobs compared the versions told across the continent and retold each story in a single plain version. The book includes "The Cinder-Maid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Reynard and Bruin," "The Swan Maidens," "The Master Thief," "The Master-Maid," "A Dozen at a Blow," "Thumbkin" and "Snowwhite," among twenty-five tales. A letter to his granddaughter opens the volume, and notes at the end discuss the sources and variants of each story. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
