Joel Cook, an American journalist from Philadelphia, published England, Picturesque and Descriptive in 1882 as a guide and keepsake for his countrymen visiting the land of their forefathers. Starting from Liverpool, where most American travelers landed, he follows a series of routes: through Chester and North Wales, northward to the Lake Country and the Border castles, across the Midlands by way of the Peak and Haddon Hall to London, then along the Thames and out from the capital to the Tweed, to Milford Haven and to the south coast. Each stop brings history, legend and description, illustrated with nearly five hundred engravings. It offers a lively picture of Victorian England as seen through admiring American eyes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
