Elements of Chemistry,
In a New Systematic Order, Containing all the Modern Discoveries
Elements of Chemistry is the English translation by Robert Kerr of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier's Traité élémentaire de chimie, published in Paris in 1789 and in Edinburgh the following year. It is the first modern textbook of chemistry. Lavoisier presents the new system built on his demolition of the phlogiston theory: combustion and respiration as combination with oxygen, the composition of water and of the atmosphere, the nature of acids and salts, and the law that matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical change. He introduces the systematic nomenclature still in use and devotes the third part to the instruments and operations of the laboratory, with plates drawn by his wife.
