East of Eden
East of Eden, published in 1932, is a novel by the American writer Isa Glenn, not to be confused with John Steinbeck's later book of the same name. Its subject is Eva Litchfield, a novelist of real gifts and a beauty whose coolness unsettles everyone around her, and her marriage to Nicholas Van Suydam, heir to one of the old Dutch families of Manhattan. The story is told by a friend returning from years abroad to the literary New York of the late 1920s, a world of publishers' parties, gossip and ambition that Glenn draws with wit and some satire. The novel asks what a woman who wants only to write owes to the people who love her. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
