Dostoevsky

by André Gide

About 3 h 34 min of reading17 chapters

Dostoevsky collects Andre Gide's writings on the Russian novelist, published in French in 1923 and in this English edition in 1926 with an introduction by Arnold Bennett. The book opens with an essay on Dostoevsky as revealed in his letters, written in 1908, and continues with the six lectures Gide gave at the Vieux-Colombier theater in 1922, in which he reads the novels for their psychology of humility, pride and the divided self, setting Dostoevsky against Balzac, Nietzsche and the French classical tradition. An appendix adds two shorter pieces. Gide's Dostoevsky is also a self-portrait, and the lectures mark the point at which the Russian became central to modern French letters. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
