Domesday Book and Beyond: Three Essays in the Early History of England
Domesday Book and Beyond, published in 1897, is the work of Frederic William Maitland, the Cambridge legal historian whose writing changed the study of medieval England. Its three essays begin with the great survey William the Conqueror ordered in 1086 and read backward from it. The first, Domesday Book, asks what the survey was for and what its terms, manor, hide, villein, sokeman, meant to the men who used them. The second, England before the Conquest, reconstructs the society of the Anglo-Saxons, the free village and the lord's hall, from the charters and laws. The third, The Hide, is a close inquiry into the unit of land assessment. Maitland writes with wit and caution, and the book remains indispensable. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
