Dio's Rome, Volume 5
An Historical Narrative Originally Composed in Greek During The Reigns of Septimius Severus, Geta and Caracalla, Macrinus, Elagabalus and Alexander Severus: and Now Presented in English Form
Cassius Dio, a Roman senator from Bithynia who held office under the Severan emperors, wrote a history of Rome in eighty books of Greek, from the arrival of Aeneas to his own time. This fifth volume of Herbert Baldwin Foster's translation, published in 1906, presents the extant books 61 to 76, covering the years 54 to 211: the reign of Nero and the revolt of Boudicca, the civil wars of 69, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian, Trajan's Dacian wars, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and the German wars, Commodus, the murder of Pertinax, the auction of the empire and the rise of Septimius Severus. Much of this portion survives through the medieval epitome of Xiphilinus, as Foster's notes explain.
