Democracy—false or true?
Sir William Blake Richmond, a painter best known for the mosaics of St. Paul's Cathedral, wrote this book at the age of seventy-eight and dedicated it to the honest working classes of England, rich and poor, by one of themselves. In short numbered sections he asks what democracy has delivered after the war, attacks party politics, profiteering and the cult of the individual, and sets against them his own ideals of craftsmanship, education and public beauty, drawn from Ruskin and William Morris. The second half, A Dream of England, is a utopian vision of the country remade. Published in 1920, it is a document of post-war disillusion by a Victorian who outlived his age. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first section free.
