Darwin, and After Darwin, Volumes 1 and 3

by George John Romanes

An Exposition of the Darwinian Theory and a Discussion of Post-Darwinian Questions

About 7 h 29 min of reading22 chapters

Darwin, and After Darwin was planned by George John Romanes, Darwin's younger friend and scientific heir, as a three-part exposition of evolutionary theory and the questions it left open. The text presented here is his first part, The Darwinian Theory, published in 1892. In its first section Romanes marshals the evidence for evolution from classification, morphology, embryology, paleontology and the geographical distribution of species; in the second he explains natural selection, reviews the evidence for it in protective coloring, warning colors and mimicry, answers the standing criticisms and discusses sexual selection. Written for educated readers rather than specialists and illustrated throughout, it was for many years the clearest introduction to Darwin's ideas in English. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
