Daisy
Daisy, published in 1868 under the pen name Elizabeth Wetherell, is Susan Warner's sequel to Melbourne House, and it carries the story of Daisy Randolph from the age of ten to the outbreak of the Civil War. When her father is injured and her parents go abroad, Daisy is sent with her aunt to Magnolia, the family plantation in the South, and placed under a severe governess, Miss Pinshon. There she comes to know the seven hundred enslaved people who work the estate, and her new faith collides with what she sees in the quarters. Later chapters take her to school in New York and to West Point, where the cadets she befriends will soon be divided by the war. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
