Cuore (Heart): An Italian Schoolboy's Journal
Cuore, published in 1886, is Edmondo De Amicis's novel in the form of a schoolboy's diary, kept through a year at a municipal school in Turin. Enrico records his classmates, the strong and kind Garrone, the hard-working Coretti, the cruel Franti, the teachers and the poor families of the city, with letters from his parents correcting and encouraging him. Each month the master reads a story of a young hero, such as The Little Patriot of Padua, The Little Vidette of Lombardy and The Sardinian Drummer-Boy, meant to teach courage and love of the new Italian nation. The book was read by generations of Italian children. This is Isabel F. Hapgood's translation. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
