Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection
A Series of Essays
Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection, published in 1870 by Alfred Russel Wallace and given here in its second edition of 1871, collects the essays in which he developed the theory he had discovered independently of Darwin. It opens with his Sarawak paper of 1855 on the law governing the introduction of new species and the Ternate essay of 1858 that prompted Darwin to publish. Other essays treat mimicry and protective coloring, the swallowtail butterflies of the Malay region, instinct, birds' nests and creation by law. The last two, on human races and the limits of natural selection as applied to man, mark Wallace's break with Darwin.
