Commentaries on the Laws of England, Book the First

by Sir William Blackstone

About 11 h 26 min of reading28 chapters

William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England grew out of the lectures he gave at Oxford as the first professor of English law, and were published in four books between 1765 and 1769. This first book, Of the Rights of Persons, opens with an introduction on the study and nature of law in general and the laws of England in particular, and then surveys the absolute rights of individuals, the Parliament, the king and his title, prerogative and revenue, the clergy, the military, the people as aliens and natives, master and servant, husband and wife, parent and child, and corporations. Blackstone's orderly, elegant exposition made the common law intelligible for the first time and shaped legal education in Britain and America. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
