Cole's Funny Picture Book No. 1
Cole's Funny Picture Book No. 1 was first published in Melbourne in 1879 by E. W. Cole, the owner of Cole's Book Arcade, to advertise his shop and amuse the children of Australia, and it was reprinted for more than a century. It is a scrapbook of rhymes, puzzles, riddles, pictures and short stories arranged in lands: Girl Land, Boy Land, Dolly Land, Temper Land, Laziness Land and the rest, each page a mixture of nonsense, moral warning and Cole's own hobby-horses, including his famous Whipping Machine for naughty boys and his opening essay on Australia as the best country on earth. The book opens a window on the Victorian nursery and on one of Melbourne's great eccentrics. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
