Christopher Columbus, and How He Received and Imparted the Spirit of Discovery was published in 1891 by Justin Winsor, librarian of Harvard University, on the eve of the four-hundredth anniversary of 1492. Winsor begins with a critical review of the sources and earlier biographers, then follows Columbus through his obscure early life, his years in Portugal, his negotiations in Spain, the four voyages and his disgrace and last years. Unlike the admiring biographies of his day, Winsor judges Columbus severely, especially for his treatment of the native peoples, while setting his voyages in the wider history of geographical discovery.
