Carmilla
Carmilla is a vampire story by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, first published in 1871 and 1872, a quarter century before Dracula. Laura, who lives with her father in a lonely castle in Styria, takes in a beautiful young guest after a carriage accident on the road. Carmilla is languid, affectionate and secretive, she will not speak of her family, and as the weeks pass the girls of the neighborhood begin to sicken and die. Le Fanu tells the story through Laura's own account and the testimony of a grieving general, and he lets the attraction between the two young women carry the horror. Bram Stoker read it closely, and so has everyone who has written about vampires since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
