This is Captain Cook's own journal of the voyage of the Endeavour from 1768 to 1771, printed for the first time in his words in 1893 from the manuscript, edited by Captain W. J. L. Wharton, Hydrographer of the Admiralty. The published account had been rewritten by John Hawkesworth; Wharton's purpose was to let the seaman speak. Cook records the passage to Rio and round Cape Horn, three months at Tahiti observing the transit of Venus, the circumnavigation and charting of New Zealand, the running survey of the east coast of Australia, the near loss of the ship on the Great Barrier Reef and the deadly stay at Batavia. Wharton adds a life of Cook and reproductions of his charts. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
