Cameron of Lochiel

by Philippe Aubert de Gaspé

Translated by Sir Charles G. D. RobertsAbout 5 h 51 min of reading20 chapters

Archibald Cameron of Lochiel, a young Scottish exile, and Jules d'Haberville, the son of a French-Canadian seigneur, are schoolfellows at Quebec in the 1750s and friends for life, until the British conquest of Canada puts them on opposite sides and Lochiel is ordered to burn the farms of the people who sheltered him. Philippe Aubert de Gaspé wrote Les Anciens Canadiens in 1863 at the age of seventy-six, and filled it with the legends, feasts, songs and manners of the old French colony he had known as a boy, including the story of the witch La Corriveau. This edition presents it in Sir Charles G. D. Roberts's translation, which renamed the book for its Scottish hero. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
