Benjamin Franklin, Self-Revealed, Volume 1 (of 2)

by William Cabell Bruce

A Biographical and Critical Study Based Mainly on his own Writings

About 13 h 05 min of reading24 chapters

Benjamin Franklin, Self-Revealed, by the Maryland lawyer and politician William Cabell Bruce, was published in 1917 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1918. Rather than tell Franklin's life in order, Bruce studies the man through his own writings, quoting him at length. This first of two volumes examines Franklin's moral standing and his famous system of virtues, his religious beliefs, his work as a philanthropist and citizen, his family relations, and his many friendships in America, Britain and France. The result is a portrait of character, generous but not uncritical, built largely from Franklin's own words. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
