Beauty and the Beast

by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont

About 22 min of reading1 chapters

Beauty and the Beast is the version of the fairy tale written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and published in 1756 in her Magasin des enfants, a collection of stories and lessons for young girls. A merchant loses his fortune, plucks a rose for his youngest daughter from the garden of a monstrous Beast, and must give her up in exchange for his life. Beauty goes to the Beast's palace, dines with him each evening, refuses his nightly proposal, and learns in time to see past his appearance. Leprince de Beaumont shortened an earlier, far longer French version and gave the tale the shape in which it has been told ever since.
