Aurelian; or, Rome in the Third Century
Aurelian, or Rome in the Third Century is a historical novel in letters by the American Unitarian minister William Ware, first published in 1838 under the title Probus and a sequel to his Zenobia. Lucius Manlius Piso, a Roman noble who has become a Christian, writes from Rome to the defeated queen Zenobia in her retirement near Tivoli, describing the city under the soldier-emperor Aurelian, the growing Christian community and its leaders, the hostility of the pagan priesthood, and the persecution that Aurelian finally unleashes. The letters mix domestic scenes with debates on religion and end in the arena and the catacombs. Ware's novels were widely read in nineteenth-century America.
