At Good Old Siwash, published in 1911, is a collection of comic stories by the American humorist George Fitch about life at Siwash, an imaginary small college in the Midwest. The narrator, a loyal alumnus, recalls the great days of football, fraternity rivalries and student schemes, beginning with the arrival of Ole Skjarsen, a huge and innocent Swedish farm boy who becomes a gridiron hero. Hazing, fake funerals, girls, debates and a campaign for women's votes all pass through the tales. Fitch's slangy, exaggerated style made Siwash a byword for the American college of the period, and the stories first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
