Asser's Life of King Alfred
Asser's Life of King Alfred was written in 893, while Alfred was still alive, by Asser, a Welsh monk from St. Davids whom the king had invited to his court as a scholar and who later became bishop of Sherborne. It combines annals of the Danish wars, drawn largely from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, with a personal portrait of the king: his childhood love of English poems, his visits to Rome, his illnesses, his learning of Latin in middle age, his household, his schools and his division of time and revenue. This 1906 translation by Albert S. Cook of Yale follows Stevenson's critical text and adds Alfred's preface to his translation of Gregory's Pastoral Care. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
