Ancient society
Ancient Society, published in 1877, is the major work of the American anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan. Drawing on his study of the Iroquois and on a worldwide survey of kinship systems, he proposed that all peoples pass through the same stages, which he called savagery, barbarism and civilization, and traced four lines of development: inventions and discoveries, the idea of government, the family and property. The central chapters follow the gens, or clan, from the Iroquois through the Aztecs to the Greeks and Romans, arguing that political society grew out of kinship society. Friedrich Engels built The Origin of the Family on Morgan's conclusions, and the book shaped anthropology for a generation.
