Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley
Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge, Vol. I.
Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley was the first volume of the Smithsonian Institution's Contributions to Knowledge, published in 1848. Ephraim Squier, a newspaper editor, and Edwin Davis, a physician, surveyed and excavated some two hundred mounds and earthworks in Ohio and neighboring states over two years, and here present their plans and measurements of enclosures, defensive hilltop works such as Fort Ancient and Fort Hill, effigy and burial mounds, and the objects of stone, copper, mica and pottery recovered from them, with chapters on crania and inscribed rocks. The book set the standard for archaeological description in America and recorded many sites since destroyed. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
