American Indian Stories
American Indian Stories, published in 1921, collects the writings of Zitkála-Šá, a Yankton Dakota woman who was taken from her mother's home on the Missouri River to a mission school in Indiana at the age of eight. The three autobiographical pieces that open the book, first printed in the Atlantic Monthly in 1900, describe her childhood, the cutting of her hair at school and her years as a teacher among Indians. They are followed by "Why I Am a Pagan," stories such as "The Soft-Hearted Sioux," "The Trial Path" and "A Warrior's Daughter," and the essay "America's Indian Problem," written when she had become an activist in Washington. The voice is lucid, controlled and angry. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
