Adrift in the Ice-Fields
Adrift in the Ice-Fields, published in 1877 by Captain Charles W. Hall, follows a party of English gentlemen through a winter and spring of sport in Canada's maritime provinces. They build ice-houses for shooting sea fowl, hunt foxes, listen to the tales of local guides and settlers, and endure snow-blindness and a night of peril on the frozen bay. Then the ice breaks up and carries the party out to sea on a drifting floe, and the second half of the book is a story of survival, seal hunting and rescue by a sealing steamer bound for St. John's. Hall wrote for boys, with careful attention to birds, animals and the methods of taking them. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
