Addie's Husband is a Victorian domestic novel by Harriette Smythies, who published as Mrs. Gordon Smythies and wrote popular fiction for several decades of the nineteenth century. As the subtitle promises, it follows a young wife through clouds to sunshine: a marriage made in haste, the misunderstandings and the interference of others that come between husband and wife, and the slow path back to trust. Smythies writes for the circulating-library reader, with plenty of incident, drawing-room scenes and clearly marked virtue and vice, and the book belongs to the large body of English fiction about marriage that preceded the sensation novel.
