A Text-book of Entomology
Including the Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology and Metamorphoses of Insects for Use in Agricultural and Technical Schools and Colleges as Well as by the Working Entomologist
A Text-book of Entomology was published in 1898 by Alpheus Spring Packard, professor of zoology and geology at Brown University, for students in agricultural and technical colleges and for working entomologists. After placing insects among the other arthropods, Packard works through external anatomy segment by segment: the head and its mouthparts compared across beetles, butterflies, flies, bees and true bugs, then the legs and the mechanics of walking, climbing and swimming, the structure and origin of wings and the physics of flight, before turning to internal anatomy, physiology, embryology and metamorphosis. Every section closes with a list of the specialist literature, so the book doubles as a map of entomology at the end of the nineteenth century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
