A Terrible Temptation: A Story of To-Day
Sir Charles Bassett, rich, hot-tempered and very much in love, is courting the gentle Bella Bruce in a London morning room when his cousin Richard, who believes the Bassett estates should have been his, sets out to ruin the match and, when that fails, the marriage. The feud between the cousins runs through a bought-off mistress, a disputed heir, a private lunatic asylum and a courtroom. Charles Reade published the novel in 1871 and was attacked for its frankness about kept women and its satire of the asylum trade, both of which he defended as matters of fact. It is a fast, angry, documentary piece of Victorian storytelling by a writer who never minded a fight. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
