A Short History of English Agriculture
A Short History of English Agriculture, published in 1909, is W. H. R. Curtler's survey of English farming from early communal cultivation to the beginning of the twentieth century, written because, as he notes, no single history covered the whole period. Curtler follows the rise and decay of the medieval manor, the Black Death and the Statute of Labourers, the Peasants' Revolt and the spread of leases, the long debate over enclosure, the agricultural writers of the seventeenth century, the improvements in crops, livestock and implements of the eighteenth, and the Corn Laws and later depression. He draws on estate records and contemporary writers, and appendices give tables of corn prices. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
