A Romance of Billy-Goat Hill
A Romance of Billy-Goat Hill, published in 1912, is set in and around Louisville, Kentucky, on a hill where an old plantation house, Thornwood, holds out against the encroaching city. Colonel Bob Carsey mixes mint juleps on the porch while his high-spirited daughter, known as Miss Lady, rides the country roads. Into this world comes Donald Morley, a charming and unsteady young man with a past he would rather not discuss, and the novel follows the misunderstandings, a shooting and a long separation that keep the two apart. Alice Hegan Rice, best known for Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, writes with humor and warmth about Southern pride and the shanty dwellers at the foot of the hill.
