A Pickle for the Knowing Ones
A Pickle for the Knowing Ones is the one book of Timothy Dexter (1747–1806), a leather dresser from Newburyport, Massachusetts, who grew rich by luck and bad advice and styled himself Lord Dexter. First printed in 1802, it is a stream of complaints, boasts and opinions on politics, religion, his wife and his neighbors, written with eccentric spelling and no punctuation at all. When readers objected, Dexter added a page of commas, periods and other marks to the second edition so they could, as he put it, pepper and salt it as they pleased. The book is short, strange and oddly cheerful, a self-portrait of an American original who knew exactly how ridiculous he looked. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
