A History of the Japanese People, from the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era was published in 1915 by Captain Frank Brinkley, the Irish-born editor of the Japan Mail, with the collaboration of Baron Dairoku Kikuchi, former president of the Imperial University at Kyoto. It begins with the myths and earliest records and follows the court, the great clans, the rise of the military houses and the shogunates, the long Tokugawa peace and the opening of the country, ending with the transformation of the Meiji years. Brinkley also attends to religion, art, law and daily life, and appendices give modern treaties and official documents. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
