A History of the Growth of the Steam-Engine

by Robert Henry Thurston

About 9 h 10 min of reading31 chapters

Robert Henry Thurston, an American engineer who later directed Sibley College at Cornell, wrote this history for the International Scientific Series in 1878. He traces the steam engine from the speculations of Hero of Alexandria and the early experiments of Worcester, Papin and Savery, through the engines of Newcomen and Smeaton, to James Watt's improvements and the work of his contemporaries. Later chapters follow steam on railways and at sea in the first half of the nineteenth century and describe the stationary, locomotive and marine engines of Thurston's own day. Two final chapters explain the thermodynamic principles behind the engine. Portraits and engravings illustrate the text. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
