A History of the British Army, Vol. 1

by Sir J. W. Fortescue

First Part—to the Close of the Seven Years' War

About 13 h 13 min of reading46 chapters

Sir John Fortescue began his History of the British Army in 1899; this first volume opens a work that grew to thirteen volumes. Fortescue looks back to the military arrangements of medieval and Tudor England, argues that the standing army really dates from the New Model of 1645 rather than from the Restoration, and follows the soldiers through the Civil War and the wars of William III and Marlborough. A civilian who admits in his preface to the presumption of writing military history, he gives as much weight to the political relations between the army and the country as to campaigns and battles. Written with energy and strong opinions, it remains a standard reference. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
