About 10 h 55 min of reading30 chapters

Thomas Wright, an English antiquary who wrote widely on medieval literature and popular culture, published A History of Caricature and Grotesque in Literature and Art in 1865, with illustrations drawn and engraved by F. W. Fairholt. Calling it a general view of comic literature and art, he follows the impulse to mock and distort from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans through the carvings and manuscript margins of the medieval church, its devils and monsters, the satires of the Reformation and the prints of Hogarth and his successors, concentrating on the traditions that formed English comic art. The many illustrations make it a visual history as much as a written one. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
