A Girl of the Limberlost, published in 1909, follows Elnora Comstock, who lives with her embittered widowed mother on the edge of the Limberlost swamp in Indiana. Mocked on her first day at high school for her poor clothes and short of money for books and fees, Elnora finds a way to pay for her education by collecting moths and other specimens from the swamp for the Bird Woman, a naturalist in town. Neighbors Wesley and Margaret Sinton help her, the slow thawing of her mother forms the emotional core, and a romance with a visiting young man comes later. Gene Stratton-Porter, herself a naturalist and photographer of the Limberlost, fills the novel with close observation of its wildlife.
