This is the first volume of Robert Kerr's General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels, published in Edinburgh from 1811 in eighteen volumes, which aimed to arrange the history of navigation and discovery in systematic order. After a plan of the whole work, it opens with discoveries from the time of King Alfred to Prince Henry of Portugal: the Norse voyages to Greenland and Vinland, two Arab travelers in India and China, Benjamin of Tudela, the friars Carpini and Rubruquis among the Mongols, Haitho of Armenia, Marco Polo and Oderic of Pordenone.
