Wilhelm Meister's apprenticeship and travels, vol. 1 (of 2)
Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, first published in 1795 and 1796, is the novel that gave the coming-of-age story its classic form, and Goethe's work is here in the English translation by Thomas Carlyle, which first appeared in 1824. Wilhelm, the son of a prosperous merchant, turns his back on trade for the theater, falls in love with an actress, and joins a wandering company of players. On the road he meets some of Goethe's memorable figures, the mysterious child Mignon, the sorrowful old Harper and the lighthearted Philina, and talks at length about acting and about Hamlet. This first volume opens with Carlyle's notes and contains the first seven books of the Apprenticeship. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
