Faust: A Tragedy

Translated by John Stuart BlackieAbout 3 h 48 min of reading45 chapters

Faust: A Tragedy presents the first part of Goethe's drama in the English verse translation of John Stuart Blackie, professor of Greek at Edinburgh, who first published it in 1834 and revised it later in life. The aging scholar Faust, having exhausted all learning, makes his wager with Mephistopheles and is led out into the world: the cellar at Leipzig, the witches' kitchen, the seduction and ruin of Margaret, and the Walpurgis Night on the Brocken. Blackie supplies a preface on the poem and its translators, the Dedication, the Prelude at the Theatre and the Prologue in Heaven, and notes on Goethe's sources and the Faust legend. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
