Maxims and Reflections

by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Translated by T. Bailey SaundersAbout 2 h 11 min of reading15 chapters

Maxims and Reflections gathers the prose aphorisms Goethe scattered through Wilhelm Meister's Travels, his periodical Art and Antiquity and his posthumous papers, in the translation of T. Bailey Saunders, first published in 1893. Saunders arranges several hundred of them under four heads: life and character, literature and art, science, and nature. They range from a line to a paragraph and cover conduct, error, the uses of age, the nature of genius, the limits of criticism, color, geology and the relation of hypothesis to observation, with a preface by the translator. Many sayings familiar in English, on the difference between knowing and doing or on the way we see only what we know, come from this collection. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
