Edgar Alfred Bowring, an English civil servant and politician who translated much German verse, published The Poems of Goethe, Translated in the Original Metres in 1853, and this text includes the preface to his revised second edition. The collection covers almost the whole range of Goethe's shorter poetry: songs, ballads such as The Erl-King, The Fisherman, The Bride of Corinth and The God and the Bayadere, the songs of Mignon, odes such as Prometheus, the Roman Elegies, sonnets, the Venetian Epigrams, poems from the West-Eastern Divan and passages from the second part of Faust. Bowring keeps the rhythms and rhyme schemes of the originals, giving English readers a sense of the music of Goethe's verse. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
