The Autobiography of Goethe is the English version of Dichtung und Wahrheit, usually translated as Poetry and Truth, the memoir in which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe looked back on his early life. In twenty books it follows him from his childhood in Frankfurt, with its puppet theater and the French occupation of the city, through his student years in Leipzig and Strasbourg, his first loves, his friendship with Herder, his legal training and the success of Götz von Berlichingen and The Sorrows of Young Werther, to the eve of his departure for Weimar in 1775. Goethe blends fact and reflection on purpose. This edition uses the translation credited to A. J. W. Morrison and John Oxenford. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first book is free.
